Melbourne Airport Rail will connect Melbourne Airport to Victoria’s metropolitan and regional rail network, delivering ‘turn-up-and-go’ train services from the airport to Melbourne’s CBD, via Sunshine.

Infrastructure Australia, the nation's independent infrastructure advisor, has positively assessed the business cases for Melbourne Metro and the ongoing upgrade of the Murray Basin rail network.

This assessment brief outlines the Victorian Government's proposal for a new metro-style rail line that will provide 17 additional train services across Melbourne. The project will create six independent lines on the Melbourne network and introduce metro-style services across the network.

The North East Rail Line project is to upgrade rail track from Melbourne to Albury/Wodonga to a Victorian Class 2 performance standard. It includes upgrading supporting rail infrastructure.

Infrastructure Australia Acting CEO Anna Chau addressed the 2019 ARA Light Rail conference in Melbourne on the role of light rail in an integrated transport network. Her remarks focused on the need to improve long-term planning and project selection, and the role light rail can potentially play in accommodating increasing levels of demand.

In 2012, Infrastructure Australia recommended the Melbourne Metro initiative be rated as ‘Real Potential’ on the Infrastructure Priority List.

On 9 December 2016, Infrastructure Australia added the Melbourne Metro project as a High Priority Project on the Infrastructure Priority List.
