Infrastructure Australia applies specific criteria to define ‘nationally significant infrastructure’.
We use these when carrying out our functions under the Infrastructure Australia Act 2008, including when we evaluate proposals for infrastructure investment and develop the Infrastructure Priority List.
There are two key attributes: that there is a clear role for the Australian Government to be involved, and that it contributes to national priorities and outcomes.

A. The Australian Government’s involvement is necessary for reasons of scope, scale, complexity, or material interest | B Relates to identified national infrastructure networks and services in a relevant infrastructure sector |
