What we do

Infrastructure Australia is the Australian Government’s independent advisor on nationally significant transport, water, energy, communications and social infrastructure investment planning and project prioritisation.

Our work involves two main streams. The first is to evaluate nationally significant infrastructure proposals or proposals that are seeking investment from the Australian Government of $250 million or more.

As part of this work, we also produce an Infrastructure Priority List, which sets out Infrastructure Australia’s recommendations on the highest priority nationally significant infrastructure proposals that are ready for Australian Government investment for planning or delivery.

The second component of our work is to develop research and advice to support better infrastructure decision-making, including identifying opportunities for reform.

Our key publications include:

  • the annual Budget and Performance Statements, which inform the Australian Government’s budget process and report on outcomes being achieved from the Australian Government’s investment in infrastructure
  • the Infrastructure Market Capacity program, which provides analysis on the capacity of the market to meet Australia’s infrastructure pipeline demand
  • the Australian Infrastructure Audit, which presents a forward-looking view of Australia’s infrastructure needs
  • the Australian Infrastructure Plan, which sets out priorities for nationally significant infrastructure across Australia.

Working closely and collaboratively with stakeholders across government and the infrastructure sector, our focus is on raising the quality of infrastructure planning and delivery throughout Australia to support the economic, environmental and social prosperity of all Australians.
