On 9 December 2016, Infrastructure Australia added the Melbourne Metro project as a High Priority Project on the Infrastructure Priority List. The project seeks to address the capacity constraints of rail services in Melbourne through the creation of a new line, and five new stations, through twin 9km rail tunnels running from South Kensington to South Yarra under the CBD.
