In April 2016, Infrastructure Australia rated the M4 Motorway Upgrade as a High Priority Project on the Infrastructure Priority List.

The proposed solution involves a range of measures aimed at making better use of existing infrastructure and capacity augmentation, along a 35 km section of the M4. The project also includes smart motorways with intelligent transport systems (ITS), upgrades to ramps, new freight bypass lanes, and road widening along a 4.3km stretch.
