In May 2016, Infrastructure Australia rated Inland Rail as a Priority Project on the Infrastructure Priority List.

The rail would connect Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria as an inland freight route, which would be approximately 1,700 kilometres in length. The proposed route would be 40% new railway and the remainder is designed to use and upgrade the existing gauge track in Victoria and New South Wales.
