On 30 August 2018, Infrastructure Australia added the ‘Gawler Rail Line Electrification and Modernisation Project’ to the Infrastructure Priority List as a Priority Project.

The project seeks to electrify and modernise the diesel fleet on the Gawler Line north of Adelaide, upgrading 20 stations and extending or modifying 12 stations.
