On 7 September 2016, Infrastructure Australia positively assessed the Adelaide–Tarcoola Rail Upgrade Acceleration as a Priority Project on the Infrastructure Priority List.

The project seeks to accelerate rail replacement and upgrading of approximately 600 kilometres of track between Adelaide (Islington and Outer Harbour) and Tarcoola. The project aims to mitigate track fatigue and failure risks caused by ageing infrastructure.
