The project will improve the efficiency and safety of freight and other vehicles on the highway by widening the sealed section and creating improved flood immunity to support the operation of wide and heavy vehicles. The Western Australian Government is seeking $143.2 million in Commonwealth funding for the project.

This assessment brief outlines the Queensland Government's plan for the core Cross River Rail project. The project will provide the necessary infrastructure to support the transformation of Brisbane into Australia's third internationally competitive city and support critical freight networks. An updated capital cost of $4,445 million was announced publicly by the Queensland Government in late June 2012. The Queensland Government is seeking $3.33 billion of Commonwealth funding for the project.
